Detroit News: Letter: Michigan’s beer and wine distributors drive economic growth

Michigan’s local family-owned beer and wine distributors are vital players in our state’s alcohol industry, employing more than 5,000 full-time workers and investing more than $6.5 million in our communities.
These businesses bridge the gap between producers and consumers by warehousing, marketing, selling, delivering and merchandising products from more than 2,000 alcohol producers, including 800 Michigan-based brands.
Employing more than 5,200 full-time workers with competitive salaries and benefits, Michigan’s beer and wine distributors also contribute significantly to community initiatives, investing at least $6.5 million annually in more than 2,200 charitable and community events. They deeply value giving back to the places they live, work and serve.
Distributors take immense pride in building the brands they sell, leveraging their expertise and resources to elevate the market presence of a wide selection of products. They invest more than $40 million annually in marketing and brand development, supporting more than 17,750 licensed retailers across the state, from the smallest corner shops to the largest supermarkets. Distributors help new and established brands flourish and ensure consumers have access to an incredible variety of choices.
Thanks to our distributors, Michiganians can choose from 42,000 different beers, more than 1,400 mixed spirit drinks and 253,000 wines. This incredible range is a testament to the effectiveness of Michigan’s three-tier system for alcohol distribution, which helps ensure that even small producers can find their way to market, fostering competition and innovation.
Michigan’s beer and wine distributors are integral partners in driving economic growth, supporting communities and promoting responsible consumption. Their dedication underscores their indispensable role in Michigan’s alcohol industry and the vital three-tier system.
Our distributors are excited to build on their rich history as they continue to innovate and grow the state’s thriving beer and wine industry for producers, retailers and consumers alike.
