    Brad Lucas Highlighted by National Beer Wholesalers Association

     BATTLE CREEK, MI – Michigan beer distribution company Atlas Sales, Inc. is pleased to announce that Brad Lucas, night shift leadman, has been recognized in the National Beer Wholesalers Association (NBWA) Employee Spotlight Program. Lucas has worked with Atlas Sales, Inc. for two years, having started as a merchandiser. As night shift leadman, Lucas is responsible for leading the loading crew in getting orders built, organized and ready for delivery to Atlas’ customers.

    FLINT – Oskar Blues Brewery, the hugely popular craft brewer and industry pioneer, is teaming up with Flint distributor John P. O’Sullivan Distributing Inc., the Torch Bar and Grill and other local businesses to throw a party Thursday to raise funds and collect packaged water for families affected by the water crisis. Oskar Blues is set to deliver a second round of 50,000 cans of clean drinking water this week, bringing the total to 100,000 cans provided. OB’s nonprofit arm, the CAN’d Aid Foundation will be presenting a $5,000 check to the Flint Child Health and Development Fund on Thursday.

     Also Thursday, bars and restaurants in five counties will donate proceeds from sales to the Flint water relief effort. (A list of the establishments is at the bottom.) 

    The event at the Torch Bar will be held from noon to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 28, in Buckham Alley, which will be closed to motor traffic during the event. The Torch Bar is located in the alley, between 1st and 2nd Streets in downtown Flint. Details of the event called “Flint’s Got Grit, a Community Throwdown,” styled as a block party, are as follows:

      Oskar Blues will be giving away water at the event, as well as root beer. Oskar Blues has already delivered 100,000 cans of water this week to Flint. The first 50,000 cans were sent to the Eastern Michigan Food Bank last week. O’Sullivan Distributing will be receiving an additional 50,000 cans from Oskar Blues this week, which the distributor will warehouse on behalf of Bottles for the Babies, a local Flint charity. 

     Coordinated by Oskar Blues’ charitable foundation that assists in national disasters, the CAN’d Aid Foundation, the event will also feature a way for attendees to donate money, with all proceeds toward Flint water relief efforts.

     Torch Bar and Grill is holding a tap takeover in conjunction with the event, and will donate $1 from every pint of Oskar Blues sold toward providing filters, lead testing and water for Flint families. The throwdown goes until close. A landmark that has been in Flint for seven decades, Torch is renowned for its burgers, which are ranked as among the best in the United States. In addition, more than a dozen other bars and restaurants in Genesee, Saginaw, Bay, Midland, Oakland and Lapeer counties will donate $1 from every pint of Oskar Blues to the CAN’d Aid relief effort. 

     Oskar Blues is serving free meals of barbecued beer-can chicken during the event, prepared by Oskar Blues executive chef Jason Rogers. The signature chicken dish is free to all attendees of the event. Chicken will be served until 6 p.m.

      People are invited to also bring unopened bottles or jugs of drinking water to the event as a way to add to the relief effort.

      Bottles for the Babies will be on hand to promote the event, deliver donated water to the appropriate designated relief locations, and pass out information about water options. It is also raising relief funds through a Go Fund Me effort. In addition, Bottles for the Babies will be a panelist in a nationally televised town hall the day before, on Wednesday, hosted by MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow.

       Powers Distributing is 1st in U.S. to join landmark energy          program, build Michigan’s 3rd largest solar installation

     ORION TOWNSHIP, Mich. (Jan. 20, 2016) – Powers Distributing Co., a family-owned company with a strong commitment to sustainability, is now one of Michigan’s largest private investors in clean, renewable energy - and the first beer distributor in the United States to participate in the Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) program. 

    “Clean, renewable energy has evolved from being a good idea to also being good business,” said Gary Thompson, Powers’ chief operating officer.

     Thompson and Powers’ staff welcomed Orion Township officials and environmental professionals to their Orion Township headquarters Wednesday afternoon to celebrate the announcement. Those in attendance learned more about the company’s ongoing environmental efforts while gaining insight into how any business can use PACE financing to help the environment and make a positive impact on the quality of life for the community.

     “Powers is a multi-generation family company with deep roots in our community,” said Thompson. “Investing in sustainability and clean energy is part of our commitment to our community, our state and to future generations.

    ” A dedication to environmental efforts is nothing new at Powers. From 2013 to 2015, the company added more than 16,000 square-feet of solar panels to its recycling center, reduced monthly energy costs by $2,000, installed LED lighting, and began working towards becoming a zero landfill business. The company owns and runs the world’s largest privately-held hybrid fleet of tractor trailers – another environmentally conscious move.

     According to Thompson, those efforts will go even farther with future projects under the PACE program, which was funded by Petros PACE Finance. This isn’t an opportunity limited to any one kind of business.

     According to Andy Levin, founder of Lean & Green Michigan, PACE is something that goes at the speed of business. “Any kind of business can benefit,” he said. 

    Through Lean & Green Michigan, Levin has created a co-op approach, allowing many local governments to join together to make PACE accessible to thousands of business owners across the state. 

    A few guidelines make this possible. Each PACE project must be cash flow positive, saving more money through reduced utility bills than the cost of repaying the loan. The Lean & Green Michigan program is open to all local governments across the state – for free. And, it is a uniform program, so financing is handled the same way across all participating jurisdictions – making it easier for both lenders and those interested in applying to participate. 

    Levin said: “Powers is most interesting because it is the very first beer distributor in the country to complete a clean energy upgrade using this financing.

    ” Thompson said PACE allows business owners to make the improvements they need to make with an eye on a better future. “Renewable energy and energy efficiency are critical to conservation and reduce our dependence on imported fuels,” he said. PACE will allow us to continue to do business, and save money, in the future, while having less of an impact on the environment where we live.

    ” What’s next for Powers? 

    We’ll have to wait and see. “We don’t have a next project identified yet, but PACE will put us in a position to be ready for it,” said Thompson.

     Orion Township Supervisor Chris Barnett anticipates the company will continue to inspire others in the community.

     “Powers Distributing Co. has been leading the PACE initiative and been a leader in our area, when it comes to sustainability efforts,” said Barnett. “They have the largest fleet of hybrid tractor trailers and are the 5 th largest employer in the township.”

    DETROIT – Eastown Distributors and its employees have supported the St. Vincent and Sarah Fisher Center for at-risk children and adults for 25 years. The week before Christmas 2015, through a year of office raffles, an employee’s potluck lunch of Polish family recipes and other innovative fund-raising activities, Eastown reported that it has brought in its largest haul in a quarter-century: nearly $8,000.

     The money will provide gifts for 47 children ages 2 months to 15 years old. 

    “Eastown’s employees have really stepped up this year to open their hearts and their wallets to help the kids at St. Vincent and Sarah Fisher Center, who they have come to see as family, and that’s a reflection of the giving spirit of our employees,” said Eastown President Paul J.     Hubert Distributors will participate in the Children’s Holiday Wish Program spearheaded by the Bloomfield Hills Optimist Club. Hubert employees’ commitment to support a local charity during the Christmas season has resulted in a partnership in support of the Optimist Club.

    BATTLE CREEK — Bud Dunn, a Battle Creek businessman and vice president of Atlas Sales Inc., has been appointed chair of the national beer distributors’ Next Generation Group, made up of young leaders who will chart the course of the beer distribution industry’s future.

     The 300-member group is an initiative of the National Beer Wholesalers Association, which represents nearly 3,000 beer distributors nationwide, including the more than 50 members of the Michigan Beer and Wine Wholesalers Association.

     “I’m honored to be selected by my peers in the beer distribution industry to lead a group that will help chart the road ahead as the beer sector evolves, with large brewers consolidating, locally made craft beers increasing market share in Michigan and around the world, and technology closing the gap between brewers and consumers,” Dunn said. “This is an exciting time in the beer industry, and I’m honored to be working with energetic young leaders from around the nation to share best practices and identify opportunities for local beer distributors to compete, support small businesses and succeed well into the generation after ours.

    ” Dunn was officially appointed to the position at the National Beer Wholesalers Association’s 78th annual convention in Las Vegas, Nev., in October. Dunn will be responsible for planning and driving the agenda at Next Gen conferences, including the next one in August 2016.

     As chair, Dunn said he plans to expand and encourage participation in the Next Generation Group. He hopes to provide further education about a range of new trends, developments and opportunities within the industry with his peers. He also sees more networking and educational events with state legislatures, policymakers and fellow group members in the near future. 

    With the exponential growth of the craft brew industry in recent years, Dunn said local distributors will play an increasingly important role in supporting and sustaining that growth. 

    Dunn, 29, graduated from Tiffin University in Ohio with a bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management and a Master’s degree in Business Administration. He began working at Atlas in his teens in all capacities as a part-timer, from landscaping to warehouse duties and sales. In 2009, he began working full-time as business development manager. Dunn is a volunteer teacher at Junior Achievement of Southwest Michigan. He graduated from Lakeview High School in Battle Creek.

     In addition to his expertise in sales, portfolio and logistics management, Dunn also spearheads many of Atlas’ charitable and community projects. 

    Dunn is the third generation in the family business. He is married to Sara and is the son of Greg Dunn and Calhoun County Commissioner Kathy-Sue Dunn. Bud Dunn’s grandmother, Frankie Fagan, ran the company for many years and is still a partner.

    Beverage distributors Eastown Distributors Co. and Powers Distributing Co. sponsored a nationally renowned motivational speaker to share first-hand lessons in the dangers of underage drinking and driving with students in three Michigan counties during a weeklong visit Oct. 27-Oct. 30. 

    “As a local family business with deep roots in our community, Eastown Distributors is committed to helping keep our communities safe and inspiring youth to make good decisions in life, and that’s where Jim Rockwell has been especially effective,” said Eastown President Paul Quasarano. “Jim has the ability to make a tremendous impression and impact on young people, especially on their decision-making when it comes to alcohol, drinking and driving.”

     Rockwell is a motivational speaker on preventing teen drinking. He was 16 when he got behind the wheel drunk, causing a head-on collision that nearly took his own life. He was in a coma for six weeks and spent seven months recovering from his injuries. Though he can live independently today after undergoing rigorous rehabilitation and therapy, he suffers from impairment in his motor skills and sight and as a result, can’t drive a car.

     Rockwell spoke at the University of Michigan-Dearborn and at Edsel Ford High in Dearborn. He also spoke at Cesar Chavez High School, University Preparatory Academy, Allen Academy and George Crockett Academy in Detroit. In addition, Rockwell addressed students at Annie E. Flynn Educational Center in Sterling Heights and Atherton High School in Burton.

     Rockwell has visited schools in Michigan for many years in events sponsored by Michigan distributors such as Eastown and Powers.

    ANN ARBOR – Ann Arbor area professional chefs cooked up over $153,000 to serve a good cause, raising money through a unique auction of food-and-beverage experiences – from personal chefs for an evening to tailgate party packages – to benefit the March of Dimes, the event’s main sponsor O&W Inc. announced today. 

    The March of Dimes Signature Chefs Auction event on Monday night attracted a sold-out crowd of 400 people to Barton Hills Country Club. As the event’s organizers, O&W recruited local chefs, area businesses, Michigan distiller and craft brewer New Holland Brewing Co., and Boston Beer Co., craft brewer of the Sam Adams brands to donate their time, talents and products to the event. In addition, O&W employees also volunteered as staff, servers and more at the fundraiser.

     The event benefits the Ann Arbor Division of the March of Dimes, which proudly supports community programs and institutions in Livingston, Monroe and Washtenaw counties.

     “Good food and good drinks always bring people together, and we’re grateful to our entire community for working together for stronger, healthier babies,” said event co-chair, Kit Wanty Morgeson, who is also vice president of marketing for O&W Inc., a fifth-generation business. “As a family owned company with deep roots in our community, O&W Inc. is thrilled we have this opportunity to give back to an important cause, and work with so many business and community partners who stepped up. The food was terrific and the show of generosity was even better, and we’re thankful to everyone who participated.”

     In addition to the live auction featuring culinary packages and experiences, the event also included a mini-live auction and small-plate creations by 14 of the area’s best chefs and restaurants.

     “March of Dimes is the largest and most respected maternal-child health organization in the world. In an average week in Michigan, 254 babies are born preterm. This night is about supporting these babies by helping prevent birth defects, premature births and infant mortality. What better way to support and learn about this important topic than over tasty dishes with friends and neighbors right here at the Barton Hills Country Club, while you bid on exciting packages”, said Ann Arbor division director of the March of Dimes, Enna Olivia Whitted. 

    “On behalf of the March of Dimes, we want to thank all these talented local chefs, the brewers of Sam Adams, Michigan’s own New Holland, O&W Inc., and so many others who opened their hearts to support an important effort,” said Whitted. “Our sponsors and donors truly showed how creative and committed they are, and we’re thrilled our community showed such a positive, enthusiastic response.

    ” Morgeson co-chaired the event with her sister Jamie Brooks and aunt Suzanne Wanty.
